Pit bulls tend to get a bad rep among the general public and we can’t overstate enough how wrong that is. And last week, another pit bull proved what amazing animals these dogs are. A clever pit bull from Stockton, California, is being hailed as a hero after saving a baby from a house fire.

It was June the 3rd when flames engulfed the apartment of Nana Chaichanhda. The fire remained unnoticed at first, at least by Nana and the rest of her family. Sasha, the 8-month-old pit bull, however, quickly realized what was going on and sprang into action.

“I open [the backdoor the dog was banging on] and she runs in and starts barking at me like crazy and I was like, ‘OK, this is weird. This is not like her,’ ” Nana Chaichanhda told several different news outlets on Friday.

That’s when Chaichanhda realized that her building was on fire.

By the time Chaichanhda managed to react and head to the bedroom to get her 7-month-old daughter, the hero pit bull had already taken matters into her own paws.

“She had already had my baby by the diaper and was dragging her off the bed. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what are you doing?’ ” she recalled.

“It meant a lot. I owe her everything. If it wasn’t for her, I would have still been in bed and things could have taken a worse turn,” Chaichanhda said.

Luckily for everyone, the fire remained in the attic and didn’t reach the rest of the building. The whole ordeal also happened to take place on a night when Sasha was left outside of the building – something that her owner says is a rare thing. However, it’s probably exactly because Sasha was outside that she managed to spot the fire so quickly and react on time.

Chaichanhda also told CBS Los Angeles that she hopes for another good thing to follow from her dog’s courageous act. She hopes that heroic acts such as this one will help change the negative perception that still surrounds pit bulls.

We share that hope, Chaichanhda, we definitely do.
