Harvard is a shelter dog, and as such he is searching for a new hoe. However, after being a part of the Greenville Police Department‘s new “K9 for the Day” program, he may be on the right track!
Harvard lives with the folks at the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina and he’s the program’s inaugural dog. The main goal of the program is to get shelter dogs out of the rescue for a while and to promote pet adoption in their local community. The great fun and stimulation the dogs get is just a bonus.
Funnily enough, Harvard became a part of the program by accident.
Another rescue dog, Heidi, was on her way to be a part of the problem, but there was a small mishap. HSEC staffers told the News Observer, that she tried to eat a bee on her big day and so she missed out.
And thus, Harvard was the new shelter dog to become a K-9 for the day!
“This gentleman is such a handsome, loving boy,” the Humane Society on its website about Harvard. “He gets the zoomies and runs around our play yard and then runs back quickly to get snuggles.”
Harvard’s big day was reported on the Facebook of the police department too. Together with the officers, he visited the Town Common, the Police Chief Mark Holtzman (bagging a badge from the chief as well!), he greeted the city public works crews, and much more. Harvard even managed to grab a quick nap in the police car.
The social media response was great and it bodes really well for the new HSEC-PD partnership.
“We were so sad to drop him back off,” the police department wrote on Facebook. “But we know he will find his forever home! Could it be with you?! Harvard and many other wonderful dogs and cats are up for adoption at the Humane Society this weekend! Adoption hours are Friday-Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.”
