Tom Huffman‘s dog was missing for a year and a half. The man had all but given up on ever seeing his best friend again, but now the dog is finally back with him in California. It’s one of those wonderful stories of how the KC Pet Project reunites dog with owner once again.
Tori Fugate from the KC Pet Project said that the dog named Topper arrived at the shelter last July. Topper was under a bite quarantine. Apparently, he had lightly bitten a police officer as he was making an arrest on another person.
Fugate said that Topper, fortunately, had a microchip. The KC Pet Project traced the microchip back to a man in San Diego, California. That’s when Fugate learned that Tom Huffman had lost Topper about a year and a half ago and had basically lost all hope of ever seeing him again.
Fugate reminisces that when she told Huffman about Topper, the man was ecstatic.
“He literally screamed into the phone, ‘You have my dog?!’”
Together with KC Pet Project’s Rescue and Transport Manager and training team, Topper embarked on a cross-country trip on August 24. Volunteers across the US met once every 200 miles and exchanged Topper with one another to help get him to his owner.

The whole journey took 19 stops on both car and plane. And it was worth it because now the KC Pet Project reunites dog with owner once again, and Topper and Huffman are finally together. All the amazing volunteers did an amazing job on this journey. And Topper’s microchip was quite instrumental as well.
