Why Everyone Should Rescue: Inside the Life of An Unwanted Shelter Dog
In LA, and many cities across the States dogs are waiting to get rescued. Beloved pre-owned models are waiting for a kind soul to step up and change their lives. We talk about adopting animals and giving them a second chance. Dogs are left behind or given to shelters for many reasons. Life as an unwanted shelter dog can be terrible. Imagine being old and abandoned by your family! It happens every day to unwanted dogs.
Jeff Steps Up
Â
Meet Stanley a beloved Labrador retriever. He used to be called Spike and was rescued from an animal shelter off the highway in Los Angeles. Stanley was living in a cold, damp and dark cage – a place that shows up in Jeff’s nightmares. Jeff worked in situations like this and got convinced animals know precisely why they are there, and it’s not right. He has three dogs at home now. The ratio of humans to dogs is 3:1.
Stanley’s History
His previous owner had neglected him and wanted to get rid of him. At ten years old, with hip issues, inflamed and dirty ears as well as hot spots (From sleeping on concrete) it wouldn’t be smooth for this poor boy to find a new home. The owner and his girlfriend have reached their limit and didn’t know what to do. The lady at the counter is polite but rightfully focuses her attention on poor Stan. Yes, they may feel bad but not bad enough to abandon Stanley.
Old, Overweight and Abandoned
Stanley was also about 15kg overweight and in his senior years. Health issues of an older dog are coo on, and their needs are more than a young buck. Stanley’s rescuers held out their hands and rubbed his muzzle. He needed love and support, not his owners. His new life would be in a shelter. Would he have a second chance? Would anyone want to make his last years more comfortable
Adopting a Rescue Dog
Stanley’s owners brought him in. At least they gave him that courtesy. Many animals are merely abandoned – dropped off in another area and thrown away like trash. Are you thinking of getting a pet? Consider, like Jeff, rescuing a dog that nobody else will take. Give an old boy like Stanley the gift of life and love by offering him a new experience with your family. It may take a while for his body to heal or for him to adjust to your home but he, or she, will be eternally grateful.
Every year, thousands of animals find their way to shelters. Some got neglected and abused. It’s up to you, and me and the public to make responsible choices when it comes to getting pets. Be a hero, like Jeff, and go the extra mile. Adopt a dog like Stanley and give an unwanted shelter dog a second chance. He may look rough around the edges, but with some TLC your new best friend will be an excellent addition to your family.
